A new home design class is offering the chance to build one yourself, in the Irish countryside.
The course is being offered at the National House Design Week, a week-long festival in the US that draws a mix of designers, architects and engineers from around the world to design and build homes for people who don’t have the time or money to invest in a home.
The National House Designer Week is sponsored by the US government, and has been held annually since 1996.
The week-old event is organised by a group called The Design Association of Ireland (DAAI).
“We are here to help you, to make your home a little bit special, a little less special and a little more like your home,” said Kerry McBride, president of the DAAI.
The weekend is held at the RTE studios, where RTE has published a series of articles about the country’s history and architecture.
In the article ‘Making a house for yourself’ published on January 7, 2016, McBride outlines how to make a house as a first step in building a design studio.
“The goal is to give you the tools and materials to make the house, not the tools,” he said.
“So you can start with your own materials, but you will need to learn the building process and how to use that.
You can get into a lot of trouble with a lot less than you think,” he added.
The classes offer a wide range of techniques, from basic hand tools and measuring tape to cutting out panels.
McBride said it’s important to choose the right materials for the design.
“It really is a choice between the materials you need, and the materials that you can afford,” he explained.
“You will also need to look at your budgets.
It’s a big challenge to start from scratch.
You need to think about what your budget is, and then figure out how much you need to spend on materials to do the job.”
McBride says that’s where a house can be made from materials that aren’t commonly available.
“We’re here to educate people about building materials.
I think the key is to look and make an educated choice,” he continued.
“Then you will be able to find the right material that will fit the job.
If you go with something that doesn’t exist, it’s going to be a disaster.”
The DAAi website explains how the course will help you “be a little better” about building and the process of designing a home in the country.
“Building is one of the most fundamental skills that a person can acquire in life,” it says.
“In many ways it’s the cornerstone of a home design process, so we want to help people take this as seriously as possible.”
The class will last for four weeks.
“At the end of the four weeks you will have built a home,” McBride told RTE.
“But you will not have designed the house yourself.
You will have gone through the process that we have laid out in this course, and you will build a house from the ground up.”
He said the aim of the course is to encourage people to build their own home.
“I think a lot more people than people realise have an idea about what they want to build, and I think that’s really important,” he concluded.
Irish house design has been on the decline for decades, with house prices in Ireland set to hit record highs in the coming months.
“House design has become one of our biggest industries, but it is not a good industry,” said McBride.
“This is a huge opportunity for us to help the local community and the country.”
The design courses aim to help designers create their own houses in Ireland, and it is hoped that by creating the right designs they will encourage others to create their designs.
